Diamond Clarity

Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity is measured by evaluating the presence of internal and external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes, under magnification. The clarity grade of a diamond is determined using a scale established by gemological organizations, with the most widely used being the one created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Here's how diamond clarity is assessed:

  • Flawless (FL) and Internally Flawless (IF):
    • Flawless (FL): No internal or external flaws visible under 10x magnification.
    • Internally Flawless (IF): No internal flaws visible under 10x magnification; may have minor surface blemishes.
  • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2):
    • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1): Minute inclusions that are extremely difficult to detect under 10x magnification.
    • Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS2): Slightly larger or more numerous inclusions than VVS1, but still challenging to detect under 10x magnification.
  • Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2):
    • Very Slightly Included (VS1): Minor inclusions that are visible under 10x magnification but are not easily noticeable to the naked eye.
    • Very Slightly Included (VS2): Slightly larger or more numerous inclusions than VS1; may be visible to a skilled grader under 10x magnification.
  • Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2):
    • Slightly Included (SI1): Noticeable inclusions that are easy to see under 10x magnification; may be visible to the naked eye.
    • Slightly Included (SI2): Inclusions that are visible to a skilled grader under 10x magnification and may be visible to the naked eye.
  • Included (I1, I2, and I3):
    • Included (I1): Inclusions that are obvious to a trained grader under 10x magnification and are likely to be visible to the naked eye.
    • Included (I2 and I3): Inclusions that are easily visible to the naked eye and may impact the diamond's transparency and brilliance.

Diamond clarity is an essential factor in determining a diamond's value. However, many diamonds with slightly included grades (SI1, SI2) or even lower may appear flawless to the naked eye, especially if the inclusions are located on the diamond's pavilion (bottom) and not easily visible from the top. When purchasing a diamond, it's essential to balance clarity with other factors such as cut, color, and carat weight to find the best stone for your preferences and budget.
